SUMMARY:Kartika Begins 2026
DESCRIPTION:Kartika Begins — The Most Sacred Month \nThe month of Kartika (Karthik) is considered the holiest month of the Hindu year\, especially beloved by devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lighting deepams (oil lamps) every evening\, taking early morning holy baths\, performing Tulsi puja daily\, and observing special vrats are the hallmarks of Kartika observance. It is believed that any act of devotion performed during Kartika — whether lighting a lamp\, reciting Vishnu Sahasranama\, or feeding the poor — carries a thousand times the normal merit. The entire month leads up to the grand celebration of Kartika Purnima with its Karthigai Deepam lighting. \nThis date is noted on our temple calendar as an observance for devotees’ reference. There is no scheduled program or gathering at the temple for this occasion. Devotees are welcome to make offerings at home or during regular temple hours.

SUMMARY:Pradosham
DESCRIPTION:Pradosham is a sacred occasion dedicated to Lord Shiva\, observed twice a month on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of both the waxing and waning moon phases. It is a time of heightened spiritual energy\, believed to be particularly auspicious for seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings to remove negativity\, overcome obstacles\, and attain inner peace and prosperity. \nIn Hindu tradition\, Pradosham symbolizes the time when Lord Shiva drank the halahala poison during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save the universe. His selfless act of consuming the poison represents the destruction of negativity and the preservation of life and dharma. Devotees observe this occasion with fasting\, meditation\, and prayers to cleanse their minds and align their souls with the divine. \nAt the Hindu Temple Society of New Mexico\, the Pradosham celebration includes special Abhishekam (ritual bathing of the Shiva Lingam)\, the chanting of sacred mantras\, and offering of bilva leaves\, fruits\, and flowers to Lord Shiva. Devotees gather to sing bhajans\, perform Aarti\, and meditate during this auspicious twilight period\, which is believed to be the most favorable time to worship Lord Shiva and seek his grace. \nPlease join us for this spiritually enriching event as we come together to honor Lord Shiva and connect with his divine energy. Everyone is welcome to participate and experience the serenity and blessings of Pradosham at HTSNM. \nExact time: 5:07 PM

SUMMARY:Maa Durga Abishegam
DESCRIPTION:Maa Durga Abishegam is a sacred ritual dedicated to worshipping Goddess Durga\, who embodies divine power\, protection\, and motherly compassion. The ritual is performed to honor her fierce and nurturing aspects\, invoking her blessings for strength\, courage\, and the removal of negative energies. It symbolizes the devotee’s surrender to the supreme power that Durga represents\, which helps overcome life’s obstacles and fears. \nDuring the Abishegam\, various sacred substances like milk\, honey\, coconut water\, and sandalwood paste are poured over an idol or image of Maa Durga\, accompanied by the chanting of powerful Vedic mantras and hymns. Each offering holds a symbolic meaning\, such as purification\, nourishment\, and prosperity\, aligning the devotee’s intentions with divine grace. This ritual signifies the purification of the mind and body and reinforces the devotee’s connection to the goddess. \nThe Maa Durga Abishegam is believed to bestow blessings of protection\, success\, and spiritual growth. Devotees seek Durga’s intervention for overcoming personal struggles\, gaining resilience\, and achieving peace. Through this ritual\, Maa Durga is venerated not only as the fierce warrior who defeats evil but also as the compassionate mother who nurtures and guides her children toward liberation and self-realization.

SUMMARY:Chhath Puja 2026
DESCRIPTION:Chhath Puja — Worship of the Sun God \nChhath Puja is one of the oldest and most rigorous Vedic festivals\, dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (the sixth form of Goddess Shakti). Observed primarily in Bihar\, Jharkhand\, and Uttar Pradesh — and now celebrated by communities worldwide — Chhath is a four-day festival of fasting\, holy bathing\, standing in water at sunrise and sunset\, and offering arghya (water offerings) to the rising and setting sun. The festival carries deep ecological significance as a reverence for the sun as the source of all life and energy. It is considered one of the most purifying of all Hindu observances. \nThe Hindu Temple Society of New Mexico observes Chhath Puja in honor of our North Indian devotee community\, celebrating this ancient and sacred tradition together. \nThis date is noted on our temple calendar as an observance for devotees’ reference. There is no scheduled program or gathering at the temple for this occasion. Devotees are welcome to make offerings at home or during regular temple hours.

SUMMARY:Tulsi Vivah 2026
DESCRIPTION:Tulsi Vivah — The Sacred Marriage of the Tulsi Plant \nTulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the sacred Tulsi (Holy Basil) plant to Lord Shaligram (a form of Lord Vishnu). Observed on the eleventh or twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika\, Tulsi Vivah marks the end of the four-month Chaturmas period and is considered the beginning of the Hindu wedding season. The Tulsi plant holds a uniquely revered place in Hindu tradition — she is considered an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and her presence in a household is believed to bring purity\, protection\, and divine blessings. The wedding ceremony is performed with full Vedic rituals\, just as a traditional wedding would be conducted. \nHTSNM will perform the sacred Tulsi Vivah ceremony with traditional rituals and prayers\, inviting all devotees to witness and participate in this beautiful observance. \nThis date is noted on our temple calendar as an observance for devotees’ reference.
